THE LONG + THE SHORT ABOUT BMP
BMP is a store like no other in Winnipeg, offering Tasty Food To-Go and Cute + Rad Things, owned by couple Angela Farkas + Alana Fiks. We offer a curated collection of gifts, housewares, pantry provisions, greeting cards, trinkets and treasures, and house made food ranging from soups and salads to cookies and ice cream. Our store is tiny but mighty, and we aim to create a space that welcomes everyone. Bottom line is, we love food and feeding people and we love finding fun things to share with you, and BMP allows us to do just that!
THE SHORT
We’re Ange (the blonde)
+ Alana (the not).
We are often referred to as just A+A, since few can keep our names straight. If you want the real long version, we met in High School and have been together for a hundred and four years (ok, since 2006ish) and love three things more than anything (in priority)
1) Our Dog
2) Food
3) Nice things
Ange is a Red Seal Chef and Alana is an Interior Designer, and when we put our brains and brawn together, we’re pretty much unstoppable. We’ve lived in various places and travelled a bunch, and throughout all of it dreamed of one day having a shop that would let us showcase all the fun things we found and tasted and loved along the way.
THE LONG
In 2015, we decided that Winnipeg deserved a better ice pop, so we opened Pop Cart which became a staple at Winnipeg markets, festivals, weddings and events and we met so many fellow business owners and local makers along the way, all the while continuing to scheme about our dream shop.
Our planning and patience finally paid off and we opened the doors to Black Market Provisions in March of 2019 and were welcomed by the neighbourhood and city with wide welcome arms. When folks ask us what kind of shop we have, we usually can’t think of how to describe it…is it a “General Store” or a “Fancy Food Shop” or a “Grocery + Gift Store” and ultimately, it’s all of those and none of those and we’re quite ok with being one of a kind!
Our food offerings include soups, fresh salads, picnic salads, spreads, baked goods, vegan ice cream, fancy bevvies and bread + other treats brought in daily from some our fave local bakeries. We use the best quality ingredients we can get our hands on in everything we make, because we believe that you can truly taste quality, and we have lots of options that are glutenless and vegan - there’s really something for everyone, and we hope you love it all!
Our cute + rad things offerings have vastly expanded since we first opened (when all we had was some jams, a few sauces and a couple cards) and now includes candles, puzzles, Baggu, handmade ceramics, and a wide array of pantry provisions. We source things locally whenever possible as supporting small local business is a very important priority for us, but also bring in lots of things from across Canada and if it’s worth it even from the US or overseas.
We are so lucky to have the best customers in the world, and the greatest team that works so hard to make all the food items we offer, and we love coming up with new tasty treats and sourcing nice new things to bring in to the shop - things are always changing around here, because one thing about us is that we love to keep things fresh!
